Censorship in schools

I don't know how you guys feel about ranting. But this is one of those things that bothers me. If it's a violation of anything, then sorry. =\

Anyway, the thing that bugs me is this: Our theatre teacher can let us watch Cry Baby with the whole tongue scene, and all. That's fine. But he can't even have a poster from RENT or Sweeney Todd. I don't get it.

I mean, I love Cry Baby. But to me it was worse than RENT. The whole thing with RENT was there were gay characters, a transvestite, drug users, HIV+ people, and death. But, if we're going by ratings, RENT should be allowed. It's PG-13 while Cry Baby is R.

True, Sweeney Todd is violent. But, it's not gonna scare anyone unless they're completely bonkers. I mean, the movie might, but just a poster of a man holding a straight razor. That's not scary.

That's just something that makes me want to slap out principal. It's so ridiculous to do that.

And on another censorship issue, my teacher last year wouldn't let us do a book report on the Notebook because it has one non-graphic sex scene. Or, generally, books that used the "F-word" even though it's rarely important to the story.

I think I'm done ranting now. But, I just wanna know some other opinions about this kinda thing.

Well,
If they would allow that stuff it would be inncorrect because I wore an American Idiot shirt to school and they made me take it off and turn it inside out because of the blood.I was like "Wtf are you people thinking? Its just a cd cover shirt"
And I don't understand it cause everyone else wore a shirt with blood on it or a nude girl and they didn't get into trouble over it.

If I were you I wouldn't have done it. I rather take detention over something that ridiculous.

Schools are selective with who gets in trouble for what. Like, at my school the heavy white girls and the really skinny black girls are more likely to get a dress code violation than the heavy black girls, or the skinny white girls. I mean, I can wear a Betty Boop shirt to school, but if my shirt slips off my shoulder because of my purse, then they pitch a bitch. That's what I don't like about stuff here, it's completely biased based on what the administrators want, not what the county dress code says. We're good so far as blood and gore. I could wear a shirt with someone having their head cut off, and I'd be fine. They like to yell and tell us "we'll send you home!" But, it's all

Personally, I wouldn't have done it either, I would've said "look you stupid -insert colorful words- bitch (because our school admin is a girl) there's nothing wrong with my shirt" Then she would've called my mom for the language and suspended me, but still.

I got in trouble at school sometimes for the way I dressed. I wore vizers, tank tops and bandannas. Even tho I was told to take them off, or change, I would've rather had them yank it off of me. The security guards would give us the most shit, hardly ever the teachers.

All of that is banned in our county. No hats, headgear, sun glasses, sleeveless shirts. It's stupid. A sleeveless shirt isn't gonna do any damage. A hat isn't either. They just didn't have enough control to suit them.

Same with our school.
I mean schools bitch about anything.
I was reading in my KoRn book and they said a kid got suspended from school for wearing a KoRn shirt and they said it was because of the backwards R.

Re: Censorship in schools

Damn you guys are too quick... leaves me behind to miss a few days of looking at the boards... lol

Let me give you all a dose of reality... Having been an employee at a school, let me tell you the truth. ALL teachers act exactly like the kids do, sometimes even worse... it was such an experience to see my own teachers using foul language and telling rude jokes...

HOWEVER... there are reasons to certain rules... women and their sleeveless shirts are banned sometimes because guys are horny little bastards that get off on seeing just a little bit of bra... so when you girls don't even expect it, you are the center of some pre-pubescent teen male's sexual fantasies...

As far as banning by ratings... Umm Cry Baby was "R"? Why the hell? There are so much worse... Try to see if you can get a poster of Avenue Q... just puppets right? lol

But back on topic censorship is wrong sometimes.

Re: Censorship in schools

I feel like my school has such low standards...
So long as we abide by dress code, and don't get into fights, which happens anyway (considering today the front foyer of the school office was covered in blood from a fight...), they don't really care what we do.

Censorship shouldn't be allowed!
As Billie said "I don't think we should censor our music and Walmart owns every industry except the porn industry so..I don't understand why they want us to censor our music."

Re: Censorship in schools

I think that the quote is misplaced since the Green Day issue has to do with music censorship and the topic has to do with censorship in schools....

However, I do agree that Wal-mart was out of line there.

Re: Censorship in schools

Well tbh I think it doesn't matter if it's music censorship or any other censorship I think it's all the same.
Because when we were in grades 1st-5th grade we could bring CDs for the last day of school to listen to with our friends or such and they made us bring the CDs up and preview them and if they weren't censored or whatever then they gave up demerits (disapline papers to be signed by parents) and made us sit inside.

Censorship to me means whenever stuff has to be censored.

Re: Censorship in schools

See.. in a school, especially a public school, censorship is important for different reasons... for example if you wear a shirt that is clearly racist, then not only can there be fights withing the students, but the school can get in serious trouble for allowing such a thing to happen in the first place. The same goes with censoring cable tv...

Censoring music however, should only apply to radio, as it is public just like the rest of the reasons for censoring. When it comes to something like what Wal-mart did its just plain stupid. There are age restrictions in place for buying R rated movies. The same way they used to do that for music with the Parental Advisory stickers. Like that it falls on the parents to decide what their kids can listen to. Hell I got my mom to buy me a System of a Down CD from Wal-mart many years ago... uncensored.

Then again... we have always censored books when we don't like what they talk about... Everyone knows Harry Potter is the devil and its the only reason kids read it... If only the Bible could be read by so many kids... oh wait no cause then the Bible would be the devil and that would just cause mass hysteria....

"mass hysteria", good song! But yeah I agree. Who decides what is "evil" and what is not? Parents? Church? Media? IDK, freedom of speech is being taken away very slowly everyday.
