CD sales continue to plummet

And the hits just keep on coming for the record industry...and we don't mean that in a good way.

According to Billboard, March album sales in the U.S. were down 17.9% from March 2008. To add insult to injury, the figure is down a staggering 29.8% from the same time period in 2007. Album sales (which includes physical and digital albums) in March averaged 6.6 million units/week. That is one million less a week than the figure for even a month before; in February, the weekly average was 7.6 million. Yes, February gets a sales spike from the Grammys and Valentine's Day, but superstar releases are relatively rare during that time period. March saw releases from acts like U2 and Kelly Clarkson and the month still tanked.

In figures from Nielsen SoundScan, for the first quarter of 2009, album sales were down 13.5% from the first quarter of 2008. Not surprisingly, sales of physical CDs continued to erode; they were down 20.3% from the first three months of 2008. Sales of digital albums (calculated as 10 tracks/album) were up 23%, but the music industry has long stopped hoping that digital sales will match the height of physical album sales.

While these figures are certainly not reason to smile, they don't factor in many of the ways that music is consumed these days, such as through legal digital downloads of single songs, ringtones and, of course, just outright stealing music.

There are plenty of misguided people who are rooting for the "evil" major labels to go under. They forget that these declining numbers represent all album sales... all those indie labels that people love (me included) are taking a hit too. Plus, when an artist like Coldplay sells 3 million copies for EMI, that helps pay for developing new artists or continuing to support under-the-radar, artistic darlings like the Decemberists.

GRR... ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING IS NOT THE CAUSE!!!

Sorry had to get that off my chest!

So called "illegal" downloading is free advertisement for bands.... and therefore should not be illegal... Why do people disagree with my thinking? Because those people record garbage that no one wants to listen...

See, in order for illegal downloading to occur... someone HAS to buy the album in order to rip it into mp3s.... What happens then is that people who are tired of buying crappy albums download the latest crap and they don't feel the need to support the artist by actually buying the piece of shit... This then leaves a shitty taste in people's mouth, and come concert time... no one wants to go...

Now, say someone rips 21st Century Breakdown... While I'm sure Green Day is told by it's label that they have to be against it, Green Day will get awesome word of mouth, and will sell-out their venues! and as an added bonus, people will buy the new album! See? Free publicity...

Die hard fans will however buy the album before they get to hear it. (especially since Green Day has made available some tracks of the album... which most people are downloading and sharing... hmmm kinda ironic eh?....) and will go to the concerts anyways... As I assure you NOES and myself intend to do... but that's my friends, is why its not really the illegal downloading that is killing sales... its the crappy bands that can't produce worth shit....

Of course... I'm just discussing the "illegal" downloading of music... There is also the legitimate purchasing of digital albums since no one wants to carry around a cd case and cd player anymore and preffer the must smaller mp3 players!

You know what I think they should do? offer free digital copies of the albums when purchased from a store... While I know that many people know how to rip cd's to mp3.. the truth is that it is still considered "illegal" to do so... So I have to buy both the CD and the Digital Copy? WTF?

Well... I will leave it at this... I think I found a new topic to rant about!
